“You got to be careful not to misrepresent your business online” – Megan A. Rosenberg, Criminal law attorney at The Hogan Law Firm.
In 2019, Megan shared a few things business owners should watch out for when doing business on social media using her experience as an electronic discovery expert and a practice civil litigation and criminal law attorney.
Here are 2 nuggets you can take home today:
- Don’t mix your private email with your business email.
- Be careful not to misrepresent your business online to the public
Mixing private email with your business email
Megan has seen people who used their business account for personal matters and recommended we don’t do that because it one day this information will end up with someone like her looking at it someday.
- People’s affairs.
- People cheating on their businesses.
- Cheating on taxes.
Again, none of this would have been in there. It shouldn’t be there. Right? You’re talking about something wholly separate, but guess what they asked for it.
Maybe that’s not relevant to the case, and perhaps that’s not going to the other side, but you put it out there. Don’t do that. Just don’t do it. Don’t mix your private email with your business email. If you have a business email, and you have several businesses, please keep them separate.
Misrepresent your business online
Megan shared that she found herself advising clients that their social media presence could be a factor for your business; it could come into a lawsuit because of what you post.
If you don’t know, you could misrepresent the public when you are using the word free in your advertising. You can watch Megan’s full session along with the rest of the sessions recorded during Social Media Marketing Day 2019 with when you buy your ticket for Social Media Marketing Day 2020.
